The majority of those conscripted into the RAD it was their second uniformed paramilitary organization of their life; the first being the Hitler-Jugend. Unlike the HJ the RAD took the 18 year old away from home and put him in a full time barracks and military life style. His rank seen here is that of a Unterfeldmeister or Subfield Master
